The Etruscans were an ancient people who had a profound belief in life. The unceasing mutability of existence, its perpetual turbulent recurrence and nature that simultaneously devours and procreates are the essential themes of Etruscan religion and art. The worship of Priapus, god of the fruitfulness of the field and herds, was practised by the Etruscans and his statues were usually placed in gardens. His phallus was the symbol of the creative powers of nature and was considered a suitable votive device to be placed on a mortuary monument.
