19th Century

The cult of St Augustine was early and widespread. His intellectual brilliance, wide education, ardent temperament and mystical insight formed a personality of extraordinary quality. His understanding of Christian Revelation was shown in his voluminous writings which have probably proved more influential in the history of thought than any Christian writer since St Paul.
Although its origins can be traced back to the mystics of the Middle Ages and their meditation on Christ’s wounds at His crucifixion, the devotion of the sacred heart has only officially been defined since the 18th century. The physical heart of Jesus is a subject of Catholic devotion and a feast day is observed on the Friday of the week after Corpus Christi.
