Christ is portrayed alive with the bloody wound in his side, no longer suffering, triumphant over death. The idea of a triumphant Christ was promoted up to the Middle Ages. The New Testament and the early theologians made use of language traditionally associated with Imperial Roman victories and with ancient athletic contests to draw attention to Christ’s power. Falling out of favour the idea did not reappear until the Renaissance when Christ is portrayed as the beautiful triumphant athletic victor.
