Xochipala is an archaeological site in the Mexican state of Guerrero and the sophisticated artistry of the ceramic figurines from this area has led experts to argue that they are from a precocious culture that was the predecessor of the Gulf Coast Olmecs.
The Xochipala style is represented by these fine early and naturalistic Meso-American figurines. In 1897, one was purchased in Guerrero by William Niven and subsequently sold to the Peabody Museum in 1903. However no figurine has ever been found in an archaeological context. It has been suggested that these nude figurines may have been dressed in perishable textiles and were of ceremonial or ritual importance.
