A Fine Sperm Whale Ivory Sailors Scrimshaw Seam Rubber or Sail Maker's Liner
Inlaid with tortoiseshell, baleen and silver, the top carved with 'friendships hand'

Size: 10.5cm long – 4 ins long
Seam rubbers or liners were used by sailors for smoothing seams in canvas. This was achieved by pressing and rubbing the shaped end of the liner away from the user and flattening the double line of waxed twin stitches into the canvas so deliberately making a row of 'dead men'.
