The first large gold deposits were discovered on the Rand in 1884, although the main reef series from which subsequently most of the gold has been obtained was not located until 1886. Unlike many goldfields there are practically no alluvial deposits carrying gold and all the gold secured has been won by means of underground mining. The district is situated on the great central plateau of South Africa some 5500 feet above sea level. With an excellent climate the countryside is hilly with a ridge running east and west, hence its name 'Rand' meaning elevated tract.
