The arts of the book, especially illumination, painting and calligraphy are generally considered to be the most important arts in any Muslim culture and Mughal India was no exception. Most miniature painters were also, or had been, calligraphers and pen or paint boxes containing reed pens, ink spoons, brushes, paint pigments, rulers and knives were made in ivory, wood or metal to satisfy the demand from artists and scribes working for the Mughal court. Analogous in function to the painting of icons in the Eastern Church, the art of illumination in Mughal India directly revealed the divine word.
