These paintings are the folk art of the British Isles, and provide us with a glimpse of a genuinely rural past. We are given a view of 18th century country life that is untainted by the Grand Tour and the constraints of ordered perspective. This example of a ‘farm-scape’ contains figures painted as isolated profiles, which is typical of the naive art of the period, and it was most probably painted by an itinerant artist or ‘limner’.
