Georg Siegmund Stobwasser was the best maker of 18th century Japanned papier maché boxes. In 1769 he settled in Brunswick in Germany and began to produce large circular lacquered boxes finely decorated with reproductions of paintings of the period. These boxes nearly always bore the Stobwasser name, which was later, combined with those who carried on the business into the mid 19th century after his death in 1776.
The Royal Hospital, Chelsea was founded in 1682 by King Charles II and was intended for the ‘succour and relief of veterans broken by age and war’, and for three centuries has cared for ‘The men in scarlet’ within its Sir Christopher Wren designed buildings.
