Leonard Kern worked in Naples and then Rome before settling in Heidelberg, Nuremburg and Schwí¤bisch Hall and became Germany’s leading master of turned or carved ivory. Mid 17th century Europe’s courtly taste had turned from bronze to ivory and Kern’s style reflected a shift from Mannerist elegance and refinement to the more robust and naturalistic classicism of the Baroque.
