A Fijian Sperm Whale Tooth Pendant

A Fijian Sperm Whale Tooth Pendant
Smooth old patina
19th Century
Size: 5cm long – 2 ins long
Sperm whale teeth were highly valued in the Polynesian Islands of Fiji, Tonga and Samoa and they were reserved for the adornment and use of people of rank and status. These stubby whale ivory pendants are often taken from earlier ‘Vuasagale’ necklaces that were the forerunners of the later, bigger ‘Sabre toothed’ necklaces that were made of sperm whale teeth split into long curved spear point sections.
