Sherwin and Cotton were tile makers from 1877 to 1930 and their
Intaglio wares were of superb and almost photographic quality. These
intaglio ware plaques were produced from 1890 to the early 1900's. The New Zealand Maori depicted, who full name was Matene Ne Nga Whi
Whi, was an early Baptist Christian convert in the 1840's. In turn he
converted many Maori from the more aggressive and warlike groups in the
islands to Christianity. More importantly in 1853 together with his uncle, the legendary Maori
Chief Rauearaua, he developed the concept of one nation for all the
Maori peoples of New Zealand to be rules by a Maori King. This idea was
eventually accepted and became a reality for the Maori people.
