‘Arlkwa Tree’ 1989

Synthetic polymer powder paint on canvas

Size: 152 cm high, 91.5 cm wide – 59¾ ins high, 36ins wide

Painted at Utopia station by Joy Kngwarreye of the Alyawarre tribe, this painting is of an Arklkwa tree, its flowers, roots and leaves and an eagle-hawk. In the centre of the canvas sit two women grinding the edible Arlkwa seeds on a stone.
Utopia is an Aboriginal owned cattle property north west of Alice Springs which has fourteen outstations. Each is an independent family controlled community living a traditional hunting and gathering lifestyle utilizing selected modern technology. The women of Utopia began painting on canvas in 1958 but they had been producing batik for several years previously and the influence of these designs can be seen in this painting.
