The Honourable Edward Hay was the 3rd son of Henry Hay the 8th Earl of Kinnoull and became a Minister-plenipotentiary to the court of Lisbon. By his first marriage to Mary, daughter of Peter Flower he had 3 sons and 3 daughters, the eldest being Harriet who married Issac Hawkins Browne of Badger, Salop ( Shropshire ). Browne was the only son of the poet of the same name who lived 1705 - 1760. After making a grand tour for a year in 1775 he settled on his family estates at Badger. In 1790 he opened coal mines on his estate. Browne was a member of parliament for Bridgnorth from 1784 to 1812 and was a supporter of William Pitt the younger.
Perhaps this miniature was commissioned by wife and daughter as a fond reminder for Edward Hay so often away on his duties at the Court of Lisbon.
