The Yoruba ancestor cult promotes belief in the reincarnation of every human being. Immortal souls return to earth in the bodies of the new born, mostly within their own extended family and this occurs after a gap of one or two generations. The entire welfare of the family is dependant on the welfare of its ancestors. At specially constructed ancestral shrines small sacrifices and prayers are regularly offered and the ancestral spirits are spoken to and often asked for advice.
The Ibeji twin figures are made on the assumption that the soul of the departed twin will live on and find a home in the carved wooden sculpture until it is time for its return to earth in the body of a new born baby.
