Collectors often believe that terracotta's are to sculpture as drawings are to paintings, but for the artist they also had other roles to play. They have been used by artists over the past 500 years as three dimensional sketches; 'maquette', for presenting the artists idea to the patron, for the sculptor's definitive model which his studio would translate into marble or bronze, for finished works of art which were sometimes gilded and painted, and inexpensive copies of popular busts or statues.
This head of a King is most probably from a narrative relief panel which was created as a finished work of art.
