The drilled eyes on this anthropomorphic carved shell amulet probably once contained inlays of coloured stone heightening its abstract appearance. One of the drilled suspension loops to the side of the head has been worn away with use. The back of the head has engraved grooves representing strands of hair.
Amulets have been worn throughout the world and throughout mankind’s history in the belief that they will protect the wearer from harm.
