The art of micro-carving in ivory reached the height of its popularity and technical artistry in the late 18th century.
Praticed by a small number of highly specialised sculptors selling to the fashionable society of the important European capitals and their Royal courts these miraculous miniature creations managed to amaze even the most world weary members of the court retinues.
Louis-Charles-Vincent belletete was the grandson of the famous French ivory carver, Jean Antoine Belleteste ( 1730-1811 ). He changed his family name in order to better distinguish his own work.
