A Fine Venetian Renaissance bronze stauette of a Cherub

A Fine Venetian Renaissance bronze Statuette of a cherub in classic contraposto stance. Workshop of Niccolo Roccatagliata (active Venice before 1593 died Genoa 1636)
'Master of the Putto'
Circa 1600 AD
Size : 9 cm high (14 cm high with base)
3½ ins high (5¾ ins high with base)
The classical pose of this cherub is based upon that of the antique and occurs frequently in late Venetian Renaissnace bronzes, notably from the workshops of Alessandro Vittoria (1525-1608), Tiziano Aspetti (1565-1607), Girolamo Campagna (1550-1626?) and Niccolo Roccatagliata.
However, this bronze cherub can be firmly attributed to the workshop of Roccatagliata due to the treatment of the musing facial expression, the heavy lidded eyes, and the feeling for arrested graceful movemnet. All of which are apparrent in the comparable bronze of the Three Graces in the Estense Gallery in Modena which since 1962 has been accepted as a work of Roccatagliata.
