In Ptolemaic Egypt there was a remarkable coexistence of a Greek cultural heritage, a Roman domination of the political world and social order and a faith in the only pagan religious system to offer a coherent vision of the afterlife. From this sprang the remarkable mummy portraits often called 'Fayum Portraits', with which this fine marble portrait bust has great similarities.
