Outrigger canoes have been used for centuries in Micronesia. Traditionally fishing expeditions required several nights spent at sea and stronger canoes were built for this purpose. Marshal islanders canoes are superb examples of shell tool craftsmanship and their navigation was highly skilled. The Marshallese used sea 'charts' as an aide memoire made of a framework of sticks with small shells attached to indicate island positions.
They excelled in everyday craftsmanship and these trolling lure hooks have a distinctive form not found elsewhere.
