Larger birchbark baskets such as this were often used for cooking as well as for storage. The vessel would be filled with food and water and then heated stones would be dropped in until the water boiled.
The use of bark was an important feature of woodlands Indian technology. They knew how to steam, bend and stitch bark to make collecting baskets, storage containers and cooking vessels that are strong, yet light and water tight. Bark was also used for canoes and in some regions for construction of houses.
