Stained glass was very highly regarded by the newly wealthy merchant classes in the early 16 th century as a contemporary 'cutting edge' artistic medium and many panels and roundels were commissioned for use in private as well as public settings . Serving as an aide to pious private devotion in the house hold , they publicly served as status symbols .
The subject matter of the majority of stained glass panels , such as these , was taken from prints and drawings . The works of Dí¼rer , Raphael , Mantegna , and Hans Holbein the younger to name only the best , all having an important influence in the early 16 th century , and acting as sources for the designs of the stained glass artists.
