19th Century
The ‘Fez’ became a symbol of the Ottoman Empire in the early 19th century. It became Mahmud’s II headdress of choice for his new army in 1827. In 1829 it was further extended to civil and religious officials. The ‘Fez’ was eventually outlawed in Turkey in 1925 as part of Atatürk’s reforms.
