A Pair of English Carved Pine Wood Jointed Artists Lay Figures
Male and Female
19th Century
SIZE: 32cm long – 12½ ins long (each)
Jointed wooden figures representing ideal proportions of the human body have been used by artists for several, if not many centuries. They most probably originated in Italy or Greece and have been used by artists and sculptors for the posing of bare limbs in various positions and also for the arrangement of draperies. They can be found in all sizes from a few inches high up to life size. From the 17th Century lay figures were made with pivotal ball joints at the neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, thighs and ankles so arranged as to allow for natural bending and turning. The faces are expressionless, and the majority are carved from pine.
