In South West Germany during the 17th century a different form of hunting developed away from the large pack of hounds and mounted hunters on horseback. A bird dog or field dog was kept singly and was expected to have a controlled hunting instinct together with a strong bond to the falconer. His task was to find the game, mostly birds and flush it, that is drive it out of its hiding place, so that it could be attacked by the hunting bird which had been carried to the spot. The whistle was then used to call in the dog.
