The reverse with an old paper label inscribed ‘This watch case was given to James Hill Bowen about the year 1828 by one of the crew of the Coastguard boat serving under my Uncle Lieut. C. H. Bowen R.N. at Fraserborough Aberdeenshire’

Size: 28cm high, 11.5cm wide, 7cm deep – 11 ins high, 4½ ins wide, 2¾ ins deep
Almost certainly made for use at home rather than on board ship this fine example of sailors scrimshaw carved of whalebone, sperm whale tooth ivory and wood would have once been proudly presented by the returning whaler to his loved one. Decorated with heart motifs it would have held a pocket watch and functioned as a mantle clock.
