Venus was an Italian goddess particularly worshipped in Rome, where Julius Caesar claimed to be her descendant through his ancestor Aeneas. In gratitude for his military successes, he dedicated a temple to her in 46 BC and lavished rich spoils on it. The painting on this snuffbox is after an original by the French artist Claude Niguet called ‘La Naissance de Venus’.
