These images, whilst they were intended to be looked at, it was believed also had the ability to ‘see’ and could look upon the devotee with compassion or with a pitiful and reproving gaze. Testimony to the power of the religious image and meditation upon the passion is demonstrated in the life of St Francis who prayed to God that he might feel the pain and grief that Christ felt in his passion, and was rewarded with the stigmata, the wounds that Christ bore on his body at the crucifixion.
