The enthusiasm for mineralogy at the Russian Imperial court was successfully combined with a passion for cut stone ornaments in the late 18th and 19th centuries and led to the creation of many fine works of art. Ribbon-banded jaspers were obtained from the southern Urals and the Altai Mountains of Russia and the quarries were worked extensively during the time of Catherine the Great. Many examples of ribbon-banded jaspers can be seen in panels, mosaics, vases and other decoration in the buildings of St Petersburg.
