An Unusual Fine Mahogany Ships Architects Box Containing to Scale Paper Patterns for the Hulls and Sterns of several different Whalers, Jolly Boats, Barges, Cutter and Gig, Lifeboat and a Dingy, and also for Ships Cannon and Anchors
A complete set of watercolour tablets stamped Newman Soho Square for colouring plans and a large piece of ambergris
Circa 1840-50
Size: 12.5cm high, 33cm wide, 24cm deep – 5 ins high, 13 ins wide, 9½ ins deep
This box and its contents would have been used for the design of sea going merchant vessels that were to be approved for building. Construction plans were then drawn giving details of all the principle parts of the hull, ballast, keel, decks etc. with sizes and materials specified.
