Red Zitan wood is rose coloured and considered by the Chinese to be the rarest and finest of woods. It is of the Leguminosae genus, which includes Acacia and Mimosa trees and Wisteria. Zitan is mentioned in Chinese texts as early as the 3rd century BC.
Stationery trays were used to keep a variety of scholar’s utensils on so that they could be easily moved around the studio together and also for the purposes of display.
