Georg Siegmund Stobwasser was the best maker of 18th century Japanned papier maché boxes which he produced in Brunswick in Prussia, Germany, from 1769 until his death in 1776 when the business continued under the direction of his partners. The large circular lacquered boxes were finely decorated with reproductions of paintings of the period and nearly always bore the Stobwasser name, except when they were marketed and sold in France.
