The 19th century whale men carved fids from the pan-bone of captured whales to use on board ship for inserting thimbles into prepared rope, reaming out grommets, splicing rope, working knots and especially for opening holes in a canvas sail, as the sail maker preferred spreading the threads of the canvas rather than cutting a hole in it.
