Wellington was still an important figure well after his victory at Waterloo. He became Prime Minister in 1828 bringing a sense of discipline and order to the Tory government of the day. During this time the demand for Catholic Emancipation was at its height and the issue split the party and brought the Whigs to power in 1830.
Wellington was now the elder statesman of the Tory party, and with Sir Robert Peel as Prime Minister, was briefly Foreign Secretary from 1834 to 35. His last office was as Minister without Portfolio during Peel’s second ministry from 1841 to 46. This profile portrait probably dates from these later years.
