The dog was one of the few domesticated animals in Mesoamerica, the other being the turkey, the opossum and the sting-less bee, which was the only kind of bee found there before the Spanish arrived. Hairless dog appeared on the menu, especially in West Mexico and were carefully fattened up for eating. Besides being a culinary delicacy the dog was also revered as the guide of the dead on their journey to the underworld.
