Scent has always been expensive to produce and its luxurious nature is reflected in the beauty of the containers made to hold it. In 18th century London many new perfumers' shops were opened displaying sign boards with emblems such as civet cats, roses and orange trees to draw in customers. Perfume became fashionable and could also be bought from jewellers and shops which sold 'toys', amusing trinkets that included scent bottles. The areas around Grasse and Montpelier in France became famous for the production of the flowers used in the perfumery trade and remain important centres of the industry today.
