These pole clubs were widely used as weapons all over Fiji. Like the classic ‘Bowai’ baseball shaped battle club they were very effective skull smashers. They were often made of gadi wood (Storckiella Vitiensis), which was not used for other types of club, and so were known as ‘gadi’. They all have straighter shafts, which do not flare towards the handle, are sawn off flat at the base and have less rounded heads than ‘Bowai’.
