The hardiness and swirling colours of agates gives them an incomparable ‘miraculous’ character and raises them above other matter as semi-precious stones. The power of agates were supposed to be at their greatest when taken as medicines. Pope Clement VII who died in 1534 is said to have consumed 40,000 ducats worth of pulverised stones during his last years. Collected for centuries, agates mounted and un-mounted, exist in all the famous cabinets of curiosities in Europe.
