An Unusual Pair of Sri Lankan Turned Ivory, Ebony and Silver Mounted Candlesticks
Circa 1800 – 1830
Size: 26cm high – 10¼ ins high
The elaborate design of these candlesticks is characteristic of Sri Lanka, grooved and turned with variegated circular and cylindrical sections, the body of each candlestick is painted with red and black cruciform and circular motifs. Ivory was a favourite medium on the island, known historically as Simhala and Ceylon, and was used for carving sculptures as well as furnishings that served both sacred and secular purposes.
