Alfred Southwick was born in 1875 and was an English sculptor who worked on several commissions for the Liverpool and Carlisle cathedrals as well as for an Abbey at Dowbside.
The cockerel crying out at dawn is a symbol of vigilance, especially against the wiles of the devil. In Christianity the devil presents a constant threat to the good order of human life, and iron and gilded copper cockerels are common on the very top of church steeples and spires and are said to drive away demons, witches and the devil. An attribute of the evangelist St Peter, the cockerel symbolises the victory of light over darkness.
