The Corinthian black figure technique of vase painting was basically one of the dark silhouettes set against a light background, but drawn with meticulous care and in miniaturist style, then enlivened with incision and added touches of red and white slip.
Corinth in the 7th century was becoming a great trading state with colonies established throughout the Mediterranean especially in South Italy and Sicily. Vases are found with their distinctive shapes in all of the Corinthian colonies. These preferred shapes of alabastra and aryballoi were often small in size and were used as perfume bottles. This aryballos decorated with a mythological winged deity is unusually large.
