Sandstone Head of the Buddha Shakyamuni

A Fine and Serene Carved Sandstone Head of the Buddha Shakyamuni
Cambodian or Thai
12th / 13th Century
Size: 22.5cm high – 8¾ ins high (head only)
Although Thailand and Cambodia are now two sovereign nations their historical boundaries were not clearly defined and for the first 1000 years of the common era the movement and exchange of peoples and cultures as well as of commerce and artistic ideas flourished.
From the 10th century until the fall and abandonment of Angkor, after the Thai people moved in from the north to carve out a Thai kingdom, whose legacy is modern Thailand, the Khmers of Cambodia were the dominant and political and cultural force in the region. In much of central and north-eastern Thailand the influence of Khmer culture especially in art and architecture was formidable which often makes it difficult to distinguish what was created where.
