Throughout Europe amber was worn as a talisman to provide protection against illness, and over the course of history many civilisations have used it for its healing properties in preparations. When ground up and mixed with honey it was thought to improve the eyesight, added to rose oil it could cure deafness and heal infections. Amber oil when swallowed or rubbed on the chest as a liniment would relieve asthma or whooping cough. Holding a lump of amber was thought to reduce fever, and as a cure for jaundice amber was worn against the body so it could absorb the yellow from the sufferer's skin.
