Much V.O.C ‘Company’ furniture in the 18th century was made in Dutch colonial Asia of exotic woods, but of European form, and although spices, tea, cotton and silk were the important and valuable exports taken back to Europe these woods became a popular product with the European furniture and cabinet makers.
The Dutch still have a great fascination for unusual woods. The present day Dutch wood collectors society, founded in 1947, state that their specific aim is to support and stimulate the collection of wood and wood samples. The National Herbarium of the Netherlands is one of the largest herbaria in the world with a collection of over 5.5 million specimens including 5000 wood samples.
