James Tassie had by 1795 comprised a stock of 15,800 gem impressions from all the most important collections. He made accurate copies of antique gems in two forms, but his greatest skill lay in the production of replicas of each stone using a glass paste that imitated the colour of the original. He also supplied the reverse impressions of the gems in sulphur, a red wax preparation, or in white enamel, as if the stone had been used for its original purpose as a seal.
