The British addiction to organised outdoor sports and games is well known and when combined with their love of horses the sport becomes a passion. Artists and sculptors who specialised in the depiction of horses and horse racing were often connoisseurs of the activities and experts on the ‘points’ of the animal concerned. George Stubbs for example was a horse painter par excellence of the 18th century who had an exceptional scientific knowledge of the subject.
This superb ivory carving probably depicts a white hunter, and has been sculpted by an artist with a real feeling for the form and the anatomy of a horse.
