The Australian kangaroo is the world's largest living marsupial. Over the course of evolution they have become adapted to every type of Australian environment from open plains and scrub to rocky ranges and forest lands. Three different types of kangaroo developed, each with an extensive geographical range. The stocky and powerful wallaroo’s of the coastal mountains and rocky inland ranges, the long limbed and gracefully built red kangaroo of the inland plains and the great grey of the open forests and its black faced relative who inhabits the denser bush.
The largest known specimen of the great grey is in the Australian Natural History Museum and measures 8 feet 8 inches. Unlike humans male kangaroos continue to grow into old age and thus may attain a rugged size far in excess of the average.
