The Indian aristocracy frequently indulged in the pleasures of hunting and so numerous powder flasks were made in different materials: metal, ivory, and mother of pearl and a range of animal horns. Considered as prestigious accessories they were often worn more for display than for use. However the deliberately made notches in the back of this example suggest that it was at least sometimes used for hunting.
