These amulets were designed to bring success to the hunter. By wearing or carrying the magic charm on his person he would gain the attributes of the animal and its success in hunting. A ‘Charivari’ not only adorns, but also protects the wearer from sickness and danger, and when worn by the hunter it is a talisman that has the ability to calm and appease prey, making it easier to kill.
In Germany and Austria student-hunting fraternities still exist who wear tags or badges awarded for special merit on coloured sashes. The bunch of tags used to be fastened to the pocket watch, now they are fastened to a special tag clasp on the wearers belt, and they often also have amulets such as wolves or deer’s teeth, eagle or falcon claws and stoat jaws such as these examples fastened to them.
